What To Check Before You Choose

Most HVLS fans that disappoint were selected from a brochure coverage figure and a floor area. Neither is enough. These are the checks we run in a feasibility study, in the order they matter.

Roof Height Before Floor Area

Coverage is a function of mounting height as much as diameter. The air column needs vertical distance to spread before it reaches the floor, so the same 24 ft fan covers a far smaller circle at 18 ft than at 35 ft. Start with the height, then the area.

The Shape Of The Floor Plate

A square 20,000 sq.ft. shed and a long narrow 20,000 sq.ft. shed need different answers. In a long bay, two 18 ft fans usually beat one 24 ft fan, because the coverage circles overlap along the length instead of leaving corners unserved.

Bay By Bay, Not Building Total

Sheds are rarely one clear span. Each bay has its own width and often its own roof height. A single averaged figure produces a layout that fits no bay properly — measure and quote each one.

Obstructions, Before Positions

Crane girders and hook paths, sprinkler layout, racking height, lighting rigs, ducting and overhead conveying lines all constrain where a fan can physically go. Overlay these first; the first-pass layout usually moves.

What The Structure Can Carry

The fan hangs from a load-bearing truss node or purlin, never from a false or decorative ceiling. Where the member cannot carry it, the structure needs reinforcing — that is a site decision, not a catalogue one.

Blade Tip Clearance

At least 600 mm from the blade tip to any beam, duct, light fitting, sprinkler or crane path. On a vehicle lift, check against the fully raised position, not the resting one.

Geared Or Gearless

Same airflow at the same diameter. The choice is noise, maintenance and environment: geared for industrial duty at 60 – 65 dB, gearless below 40 dB with no gear oil for hygiene and public-facing spaces.

Electrical And Panel Position

Single or three phase at 50 Hz to the VFD panel, mounted at 4 – 5 ft floor level for the operator, clear of wash-down, oil and heavy dust. Decide this before the fan positions are frozen, not after.

Optimise Before You Order

Go back over the layout and ask whether the same coverage can be had with one fan less. On a mid-sized shed this routinely removes one or two fans. It is a smaller order and a better building.

The check most people skip Ask your production or quality team before the layout is frozen. Air movement over an open mould, a weld pool, a coating line or an open product line is a process question, not a ventilation one — and it is far cheaper to answer on a drawing than after installation.

Where An HVLS Fan Is The Wrong Answer

An HVLS fan is not a universal solution, and we would rather tell you before you buy one. In these situations we will say so — and where there is a better answer, we will point at it.

Roof height under 18 ft The air column has no distance to spread, so the coverage circle collapses and fan count rises until the economics stop working. Conventional or wall mounted circulators, or a smaller diameter if height allows
Floor area under 2,500 sq.ft. Most of the fan's coverage falls outside the building. You pay for air you cannot use. Conventional ceiling fans
Paint booths and spray areas Air movement carries overspray onto wet surfaces and across the shop. A contamination path, not a comfort gain. Dedicated booth extraction; keep HVLS out of the zone entirely
Clean rooms and controlled-particulate areas Disturbs the designed air pattern and the pressure regime the room depends on. The room's own HVAC design
Directly over open product lines In food and pharma the air path over exposed product is a hygiene question. Position, not product, is the issue. Gearless fans over circulation and staging areas instead
Fine powder or loose fibre handling Air movement lifts light material back into circulation and onto surfaces you have just cleaned. Local extraction at the source
Processes needing still air Some annealing, curing, coating and precision weighing operations are specified for still air. Moving it changes the result. Zone the fans away, or interlock them with the process
Deliberate temperature stratification Destratification is the whole point of an HVLS fan. Where a gradient is intentional, the fan works against the design. Leave the stratified zone alone
Structure that cannot carry the load A false ceiling, a light-gauge sheet roof or a mid-span purlin will not hold a fan for twenty years, and no fan is worth that risk. Reinforce to a load-bearing member, or do not install
Blade clearance cannot be held Crane hook path, low ducting or a lift at full height inside the sweep. There is no safe way to proceed. Relocate, change diameter, or drop the position
Open or weather-exposed locations The fans are built for covered spaces. Rain, direct wind loading and UV are outside what the drive and finish are specified for. Covered installation only
If it is not right, we will say so A feasibility study that concludes "an HVLS fan is not the answer for this building" is a successful study. Selling a fan into a space it does not suit costs us more than the order is worth.
